¿POR QUÉ LA CUARESMA EN LA IGLESIA CATÓLICA?
“La Iglesia se une todos los años, durante los cuarenta días de la Gran Cuaresma, al Misterio de Jesús en el desierto” (n. 540).
¿CUÁL ES, POR TANTO, EL ESPÍRITU DE LA CUARESMA?
Debe ser como un retiro colectivo de cuarenta días, durante los cuales la Iglesia, proponiendo a sus fieles el ejemplo de Cristo en su retiro al desierto, se prepara para la celebración de las solemnidades pascuales, con la purificación del corazón, una práctica perfecta de la vida cristiana y una actitud penitencial.
¿QUÉ ES LA PENITENCIA?
La penitencia, traducción latina de la palabra griega metanoia que en la Biblia significa la conversión (literalmente el cambio de espíritu) del pecador, designa todo un conjunto de actos interiores y exteriores dirigidos a la reparación del pecado cometido, y el estado de cosas que resulta de ello para el pecador.
Literalmente cambio de vida, se dice del acto del pecador que vuelve a Dios después de haber estado alejado de Él, o del incrédulo que alcanza la fe.
¿QUÉ MANIFESTACIONES TIENE LA PENITENCIA?
“La penitencia interior del cristiano puede tener expresiones muy variadas. La Escritura y los Padres insisten sobre todo en tres formas: el AYUNO, la oración, la limosna, que expresan la conversión con relación a sí mismo, con relación a Dios y con relación a los demás. Junto a la purificación radical operada por el Bautismo o por el martirio, citan, como medio de obtener el perdón de los pecados, los esfuerzos realizados para reconciliarse con el prójimo, las lágrimas de penitencia, la preocupación por la salvación del prójimo, la intercesión de los santos y la práctica de la caridad “que cubre multitud de pecados” (1 Pedro, 4,8.).” (Catecismo Iglesia Católica, n. 1434).
