Todo comenzó con la llegada de los primeros colonos a Estados Unidos.
El origen del festejo viene de dar gracias por la cosecha, y es algo que diversas culturas en el mundo también hicieron, es decir no sólo en Norteamérica.
En 1620, aterrizó un barco con más de 100 colonos ingleses para instalarse en el Nuevo Mundo.
Este grupo tenía fuertes convicciones religiosas. Los peregrinos se instalaron en lo que ahora es conocido como el Estado de Massachusetts.
Los indios Wampanoag se ofrecieron a ayudar a este grupo de colonos ingleses.
Les enseñaron a cultivar otros alimentos, a cazar y a pescar.
En otoño de 1621, los ingleses celebraron las abundantes cosechas de grano, cebada, frijoles y calabaza. A esto se le conoció como el primer ‘American Thanksgiving’.
Fue hasta 1941 que se hace oficial la celebración luego de que el entonces presidente de Estados Unidos, Franklin D. Roosevelt, proclamara el día como festivo.
Asimismo para recordar la historia de los colonos ingleses, pero además, para avanzar las compras de Navidad.
