Soñaban con una república basada en los principios de «Libertad, Igualdad y Fraternidad».
La Revolución Francesa marcó la confluencia entre las tendencias más radicales y las más moderadas.

1806: La Revolución Industrial (Gran Bretaña)
Esta Revolución dio el primer paso para que nuevas tecnologías permitieran un incremento notorio de la producción.
1806-1807: Invasiones Inglesas
Con la Revolución Industrial y en respuesta al bloqueo napoleónico, Gran Bretaña buscó nuevos mercados e intentó conquistar el Plata.
1807: Cabildo Abierto en Buenos Aires
La participación de los criollos en la derrota de las Invasiones Inglesas.
Ademas el temor ante un nuevo intento británico llevaron a que el Cabildo Abierto del 14 de agosto. Decidiera la organización militar del pueblo de Buenos Aires.
Más tarde, los nuevos cuerpos milicianos se convertirían en una de las bases decisivas para el posterior accionar patriota.

Invasión a España
Tras decretar el boicot a Inglaterra, Napoleón invadió España y apresó a Carlos IV y a Fernando VII. Se formaron Juntas de Gobierno.
1810
Revolución de Mayo
El 22 de mayo los patriotas, igual que en España, formaron una Junta presidida por el virrey Cisneros. Pero enseguida el virrey fue destituido y nació la Primera Junta.
Presidida por Cornelio Saavedra, jefe del Regimiento de Patricios, y con Mariano Moreno como secretario.
Quien encarnó la tendencia más radical.
Así, morenistas y saavedristas encarnaron las dos líneas de la Revolución de Mayo.
La primera, de tendencia política profunda.
Segunda, con la idea de un proceso de cambio gradual y ordenado.
La Logia Lautaro y la Sociedad Patriótica, a las que pertenecía San Martín, continuaban la línea morenista. Animaban un proyecto de emancipación continental.
Primera Campaña del Alto Perú.
Las milicias partieron de Buenos Aires en julio.
Vencieron a Liniers en Córdoba y triunfaron en Suipacha (primera victoria patriota).
Pero sufrieron la derrota en Huaqui.
1811
Junta Grande
Renunció Moreno y se incorporaron los delegados del interior. Se impuso una línea más moderada.
Primer Triunvirato
La derrota de Huaqui y la presión morenista llevaron a instaurar un nuevo tipo de gobierno.

Bolívar, siguiendo el camino abierto por Francisco de Miranda, inició la lucha por la liberación de Hispanoamérica.

Segundo Triunvirato
Tras la intervención de la Logia Lautaro, se impuso un gobierno de carácter más radical.

Asamblea de 1813
Organizada por los simpatizantes de la Revolución Francesa.
Esta asamblea expresó las tendencias más avanzadas de la Revolución de Mayo.
Suprimió los títulos de nobleza, la inquisición y la tortura, abolió la encomienda.
Creó el Escudo Nacional y aprobó el Himno Nacional.
Pero concluyó sin declarar la Independencia y sin adoptar una Constitución.

Fernando VII vuelve al trono español.
Tras la derrota de Napoleón en España, Fernando VII hizo frente a la rebelión de las colonias americanas. Los éxitos de los ejércitos realistas dejaron al Río de la Plata como la única región libre del dominio español.
